2019 Micro-Grant Winner: Kyle Miller

About Kyle:

Originally from Northwest Montana, I started in wildfire in 2004 on the Lolo National Forest. In 2010 I took a position with the Wyoming Hotshots and have been there in various positions ever since. It wasn’t until 2013 that I picked up a camera and started to learn how to use it and it wasn’t until 2015 that I started carrying it more consistently while out on the line working.

Grant Category: Photography

Project Vision:

For the grant, I’ll be capturing what life on a hotshot crew is like while out on the fireline. I’m also trying to show and explain the tactics and strategies used by fire personnel to the public. The images will be posted with descriptions of the above on the Wyoming Hotshots Facebook and Instagram pages as well as on Kyle Miller Fire Photography on Facebook.

Previous Work:

Favorite thing about firefighting:

My favorite thing about fire is the camaraderie. The crew becomes a second family and it’s really what keeps bringing me back to fire every year.
